Sumosan has a very smart setting just off Piccadilly, with modern décor. Rock shrimp tempura had quite good texture but rather less so than the version at Roka (3/10).  Unagi rice was fried rice with a little eel; this worked well (4/10). Wild mushrooms were fried with a rich soy broth, and retained their texture yet had absorbed the spices nicely (5/10).  A tuna sashimi was supposedly blue-fin, but was inexcusably cold, just out of a very cold fridge. We left this dish until the end of the meal and it was still cold at the end, well over an hour later (1/10).

Yellowtail sashimi was of good quality. Soft shell crab avoided greasiness and worked well (4/10) but yellowtail with teriyaki sauce was rather dull (2/10). Overall I felt that this was quite good but less good than Roka or E&O, and significantly below the standard of Zuma, with which it is evidently competing.  Service was reasonable but there was one mix up over an order that was handled poorly. £80 a head is a lot for food of this quality.

11/10/2007 - Amol Parnaik (UK)
if you want to spend around £70 mark for a trendy 2 hour oriental meal, you have quiet a few choices in central London, some even with Michelin stars. Are a result, competition is aggressive and things have to be good. I didn't think Sumosan got this. The food was good, if rushed. Sushi was nice, and so was the mushroom dish we had. However, t'was all all a bit costly for what it was. I didn't like the way the waiter reacted to getting the order wrong, and though the decor was nice, it didn't compare to Zuma or Hakkasan. I fear this place was looking for clients to be seen more than the actual food. So at these prices, it was simply overpriced in my view with nothing to write home about
