Frites Atelier opened in December 2025 in the heart of Soho. It is a restaurant owned by the legendary Sergio Hermann, who earned three Michelin stars at the superb and much-missed Oud Sluis. Other branches of this little chain are in Antwerp, Ghent and Brussels in Belgium and Roosendal in the Netherlands. This is a casual place, with orders taken at the till, the menu written on a mirror and a food arriving whenever it is ready. There were a few wines. Rather oddly, as well as “white” and “red” there was a Veuve Cliquot champagne at £95 (£55 retail price) and a bottle of Antinori Tignanello 2013 at £195 compared to its retail price of £147. There was also a bottle of Antinori Badia a Passignano 2021 at £95 for a wine that retails at £47.

The focus is on double-cooked fries made from high quality potatoes. They use a variety called Agria, a high starch potato grown in Zeeland in the southwest of the Netherlands. They are sourced from a company called Lamb Weston, and the fries are cooked to order. To accompany the fries there are dishes like Flemish stew and croquettes.

The croquettes were fine, with crisp outside and fillings with good flavour. The beef croquette (13/20) seemed to me a bit better than the prawn croquette (12/20). The signature Flemish stew was poured over a pile of frites. The stew had good seasoning and flavour, and the fries themselves were excellent, crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside (13/20). Korean chicken burger was also quite good, with a pleasant filling and a touch of spice (13/20). The bill per person was £38 per person.

Frites Atelier is a good-quality casual restaurant with excellent frites and a short selection of reasonably good accompaniments. I am sure that it will prosper.
